About Uttar Pradesh Tourism

The vast and heavily populated state of Uttar Pradesh, popularly called UP, lies in north India. It has an area larger than that of Britain and only 5 countries (including India) host larger populations than this state. It is bounded by Uttaranchal, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Bihar, and the international border of Nepal. UP occupies a large part of River Ganges's fertile plains. Almost half of the country's potato and sugarcane, and much of its wheat grow here. Described as the cow belt, it's actually home to some 78% of India's livestock. The Ganges defines its religious and cultural landscape, sacred in itself and nurturing some of the holiest Hindu sites like Varanasi and Allahabad. Yamuna is the other sacred river. About Uttar Pradesh

The UP region played a central role in the history of the Indian subcontinent and its major religions: as the birthplace of Hindu gods Ram (Ayodhya) and Krishna (Mathura) and the place where Buddha preached his first sermon (Sarnath). Politically dominant UP produced five of modern India's Prime Ministers. However, the present in UP hasn't quite lived up to the past: there is a paucity of modern industry, services, infrastructure.

Agra town is the most-visited in the state, for its monuments dating from the 16th-17th centuries, when it was the capital of the Mughal dynasty. The marble mausoleum of Taj Mahal alone, made by Emperor Shahjahan, is not just UP's but also India's top attraction, in addition to Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri built by Emperor Akbar. On the eastern edge of the state, Varanasi and Ayodhya are important Hindu sites. Varanasi's riverside temples and old palaces stretch picturesquely for kilometers on the west bank of the Ganga. Allahabad plays host to the Kumbh Mela every 12 years, attracting millions of pilgrims and named the largest religious gathering in the world.

UP's capital Lucknow has some beautiful tombs, mosques and colonial buildings. There is no international airport but Agra, Kanpur, Lucknow, Varanasi and Allahabad have domestic airports and Agra is about 200km from Delhi.
About Rajasthan

Rājasthān is the largest state of the Republic of India in terms of area. It encompasses most of the area of the large, inhospitable Great Indian Desert (Thar Desert), which has an edge paralleling the Sutlej-Indus river valley along its border with Pakistan. The region borders Pakistan to the west, Gujarat to the southwest, Madhya Pradesh to the southeast, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana to the northeast and Punjab to the north. Rajasthan covers an area of 132,150 sq mi or 342,269 km² (about the size of Germany).

The state capital is Jaipur. Geographical features include the Thar Desert along north-western Rajasthan and the termination of the Ghaggar River near the archaeological ruins at Kalibanga, which are the oldest in the subcontinent discovered so far.

One of the world's oldest mountain ranges, the Aravalli Range, cradles the only hill station of Rajasthan, Mount Abu, and its world-famous Dilwara Temples, a sacred pilgrimage for Jains. Eastern Rajasthan has two national tiger reserves, Ranthambore and Sariska, as well as Keoladeo National Park near Bharatpur, once famous for its bird life.

Rajasthan was formed on 30 March 1949, when all erstwhile princely states ruled by Rajputs, known as Rajputana, merged into the Dominion of India. The only difference between erstwhile Rajputana and Rajasthan is that certain portions of what had been British India, in the former province of Ajmer-Merwara, were included. Portions lying geographically outside of Rajputana such as the Sumel-Tappa area were given to Madhya Pradesh.
History of Rajasthan

Rajasthan was inhabited long before 2500 BC and the Indus Valley Civilisation had its foundation here in north Rajasthan itself. The Bhil and the Mina tribes were the earliest dwellers of this area.

Around 1400 BC the Aryans paid a visit and settled forever in the area. The local population was pushed down south and towards the east. Afghans, Turks, Persians and Mughals followed in mixing their blood, first in war then in peace, with the existing original inhabitants. This blending gave the martial lineage to the Rajputs.

From the times of Harsha (7 AD) to the founding of the Delhi Sultanate, Rajasthan was fragmented in competing kingdoms. Perhaps it was during this era by their influence through wealth and power the Rajputs persuaded the Brahmins to link them with the sun, the moon and the fire god.
With the passage of time they were divided into 36 royal clans. Rajasthan finally settled for a long and lasting reign under the colourful and vibrant Rajputs. and it’s a surprise that they lasted as long as they did. Considering that they were at a constant state of aggression; if not with a foe, then with each other. After the 14th century their influence declined in the area.

In came the Mughals who gained control of the region through the clever strategy of Akbar, the Mughal Emperor. He performed matrimonial alliances with the Rajputs where faced military failure and thus turned them from fearsome foes to faithful friends. This proud but very divided race was thus brought to some order under the imperial Mughals, by the some deft mixing of marital and martial relations. Akbar gave high offices to many Rajput princes after seeking reconciliation through marriage to a Rajput princess, Jodha Bai, the daughter of the Maharaja of Amber. However, the spunk of the Rajput soul was never really captured, till the spread of the British colonial power. However, when the Mughals weakened they were quick to reassert their dominance. The Rajputs as a community thus has outlived the somewhat tribal Delhi Sultanate, the grand Mughals and the war-like Marathas. In fact to this day their descendants, though stripped of their titles and kingdoms, are revered as rulers by the common man.
